On Thursday 6 March, EPP-ED spokesperson on the Committee on Fisheries Carmen Fraga Estévez (Spain) and Portuguese Member Duarte Freitas organised a hearing on the European fishery policy on sharks. Stakeholders, scientific experts, Commission officials and Members discussed the preservation of sharks' role in the ecosystem and whether they are currently over-fished in EU territory.

This initiative was taken after the announcement made by the European Commission on the future publication of a Community Action Plan for shark fisheries, and in view of the campaigns that some organisations started months ago accusing EU fleets of being responsible for the decrease of stocks.
