Hans-Gert Poettering, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group, will undertake an information tour of Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic

 


PÖTTERING, Hans-GertFrom 15 to 19 March the Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, will pass through Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic on an information tour by bus. "We want to visit the countries that will join the European Union on 1 May and talk to the citizens of those countries. By doing so we can answer their questions about the European Union and about the future of their countries in the European Union and also provide information on the European Union and of the work of the European Parliament", declared Poettering.

The programme:

Slovenia 15 March: Visit to Trzic, the company Cablex, Ljubljana (press conference), Moravce (meeting with women's organisations), Celje (discussion with Mayors) and Maribor (attendance of a concert with Natalija Verboten in the Lent Festival Hall).

Hungary 16 March: Visit to Siófok (public meeting on the importance of tourism in the European Union), Szekesfehervar (discussion with Members of the Town Council), Budapest (public meeting on "Perspectives for Budapest - a European city"; Presentation of the medal "Merite Européen" by Hans-Gert Poettering to Viktor Orban; Visit to the stock exchange).

Slovakia 17 March: Visit to Bratislava (conference on the topic "In the heart of Europe", press conference), visit to the border post Rusovce Rajka (discussion with the border officials on free movement between Slovakia and Hungary), Bratislava (public meeting, Hviezdoslav Square).

Czech Republic 18 March: Visit to Hodonín and Moravian oil wells, visit at the "Tumulus Of Peace", Slavkov (Austerlitz), Prague (meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Cyril Svoboda and the Chairman of the Senate Petr Pithart).

19 March: Prague (participation in the international conference "FORUM POPULINI - European Agenda 2004" about "the political and safety dimension after enlargement"; Meeting with the President of the Czech Republic, Václav Klaus), Visit to Kutná Hora.

During the tour Poettering will also meet with representatives of the parties that are already represented by Observers in the EPP-ED Group of the European Parliament. With 232 Members and 65 Observers the EPP-ED Group is by far the largest in the European Parliament.

On a second tour from 16 to 25 April Poettering will visit Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, from 3 to 4 April, Malta and on 5 April, Cyprus. Thereby Poettering will visit all the countries joining the European Union on 1 May 2004.
