EU needs civilian-military headquarters. Michael Gahler MEP
On the day of the launch of the External Action Service on 1 December, the EPP Group's Coordinator in the European Parliament's Security and Defence Committee, Michael Gahler MEP, has called for the European Union to set up its own joint civilian and military headquarters for the planning and execution of European missions and operations.
"Its own crisis headquarters would enable the EU to integrate its Directorate for crisis management and planning, the civilian planning and leadership capabilities, the EU military staff and the EU situation centre into an efficient and coherent Common Security and Defence policy", Gahler said.
The European Parliament called for such a crisis headquarters in its Report on civilian-military cooperation and the development of civilian-military capabilities, adopted on 5 November 2010.
"This European Parliament Resolution on the Common Security and Defence Policy and the fact that the majority of the larger EU Member States have a common position on this issue gives hope that we can soon see concrete steps in this direction", Gahler added.
