The Committee on Culture and Education in the European Parliament today adopted its legislative report on the multi-annual programme for education, training, youth and sport. The established brand names in EU education programmes (Comenius, Erasmus, Grundtvig and Leonardo da Vinci) will therefore remain after 2013. In addition, there will be a separate funding programme for sports for the first time and, against the original document of the Commission, a separate youth chapter.

"From the beginning I have welcomed the approach of the Commission in creating more synergy between all the individual programmes, especially since it was overdue. Other key points were less successful. Which is why I am very glad that my efforts to totally turn around the Commission's proposal garnered great support from my colleagues," said Doris Pack, Chairwoman of the Committee and Rapporteur on the work of the last few months.

She felt clear key actions for each programme in the Commission document were missing. Her report was adopted by an overwhelming majority and eliminates this deficiency.

The Committee also voted against the Commission's proposal to group the programmes under the name 'Erasmus for All'. "The new programme includes three major fields: general and vocational education and training, youth and sports. Therefore I consider our proposal 'YES Europe' (YES for youth, education and training, sports) the right message," said Pack.

She worked hard to achieve a solid and practical position - with actions that can be implemented - for the vote in the plenary and the subsequent trialogue. "In this way we take on our responsibility as co-legislator and give due importance to the programmes at the heart of European education and training policies," stated Doris Pack.

Now, in negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework for the years 2014-2020, she calls on the Member States to take into account the noble aims of the Europe 2020 strategy in the fields of employment and education, and to confirm the budget increase proposed by the Commission: "I call on those responsible to stand up for the importance of education, like they consistently promise in their speeches, by providing an adequate budget," she concluded.
